PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The Plymouth State University women's tennis team completed the regular season Saturday with a 5-4 Little East Conference victory over Western Connecticut State University at the P.E. Center Courts.
The Panthers won their final two dual matches to end up at 5-5 overall and 3-2 in the Little East. WestConn drops to 5-4 overall and 2-3 in the LEC, with one dual remaining Wednesday against St. Joseph (Conn.). Both teams will be in Plymouth next Friday and Saturday as PSU hosts the annual LEC Championships.
Plymouth State needed a team effort to down the Colonials. The Panthers won only one of the three doubles matches but came back with victories in four of the six singles matches to pull out the team win.
The PSU wins came from six different people. Senior Katie Olsen (Reading, Mass.) won her match at No. 2 singles to improve her season record to 7-3, while sophomore Rachel Xavier (Meredith, N.H.) was a winner at No. 4 singles to up her mark to 7-2. Olsen and Xavier share the team lead in singles wins. Senior Cally Thorup (Cumberland, Maine) also won at No. 5 singles to improve to 4-3, and sophomore Megan Sowers (Londonderry, N.H.) took her match at No. 6 to go to 5-4.
Plymouth State got its only doubles win at No. 3, thanks to the tandem of senior Lindsay Coletti (Hudson, Mass.) and freshman Erica Huckins (Plymouth, N.H.), who are now 1-1 together.
The visitors got singles wins from freshman Kendra Sloat (Fairfield, Conn.) at No. 1 and senior Alison Healey (Newtown, Conn.) at No. 3. Healey teamed with senior Stacy Slater (Danbury, Conn.) for the win at No. 1 doubles, and Sloat paired with sophomore Kate Poirier (New Milford, Conn.) for the victory at No. 2 doubles.
