PSU Women’s Tennis finishes fourth at Conference Tourney

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Rhode Island College captured its second Little East Conference Women's Tennis Championship in the last three years, and its third in five years, winning the team title Saturday at the 10th Annual LEC Championships, hosted by Plymouth State University at the P.E. Center Courts.

RIC finished with three individual champions and eight finalists in the nine flights, winning the team title with 20 points. Southern Maine also had three champions and finished runner-up with 16 points, while Western Connecticut (9 points) edged Plymouth State (8 points) for third place. UMass Dartmouth finished fifth (6.5 points) and UMass Boston ended up sixth (3 points).

USM sophomore Chelsea Gray (Madison, Maine) won the No. 1 singles title, defeating RIC sophomore Liz Barrette (North Providence, R.I.) in the final, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Gray and freshman Morgan Alley (Hancock, Maine) were victorious in the No. 1 doubles finale, knocking off RIC's Barrette and Meghan Mooney (North Scituate, R.I.), 6-4, 6-1.

Plymouth State had two finalists and one champion. Sophomore Rachel Xavier (Meredith, N.H.) captured the crown at No. 4 singles with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over RIC freshman Tara Marchant (North Scituate, R.I.), and senior Katie Olsen (Reading, Mass.) was defeated in the No. 2 singles final by RIC senior Carminda Rocha (East Providence, R.I.), 6-3, 7-5.

Olsen and Xavier shared the PSU team lead in singles wins this season, Olsen finishing with a 9-4 record and Xavier wrapping up an impressive 9-2 campaign. Olsen also completes her career with a 30-12 overall singles mark.

The tournament also marked the end of the career of PSU Coach Judy Switzer, who is retiring after six seasons on the Panther staff.
