Colby-Sawyer nips PSU Womens Tennis
NEW LONDON, N.H. - Colby-Sawyer College needed to take four of the six singles matches Tuesday afternoon to pull out a 5-4 non-conference women's tennis victory over Plymouth State University.
The visiting Panthers won two of the three doubles encounters to open the match, but the Chargers earned the team victory with strong singles play. Colby-Sawyer improves to 5-0 on the season, while PSU drops to 2-3.
Plymouth State took the lead in doubles, as junior Whitney O'Leary (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) and sophomore Erica Huckins (Plymouth, N.H.) captured a victory at No. 1 and juniors Rachel Xavier (Meredith, N.H.) and Sarah Cole (North Waterboro, Maine) teamed up to win at No. 2. Xavier and Cole improved their team-leading doubles record to 4-1. Xavier and Cole were also singles winners for PSU at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, improving their records to 5-0 and 4-1.
The Chargers came back to earn the team victory, thanks to singles wins by sophomores Alex Hardenbrook (Kennebunk, Maine), Leah Goldman (Milton, Mass.) and Jocelyn Poplack (Houston, Tex.) and senior Jen Wood (East Longmeadow, Mass.). CSC also got a win from junior Tarren Bailey (Guilford, Conn.) and sophomore Paige Pulley (Bethesda, Md.) at No. 3 doubles.
PSU returns to Little East Conference action Saturday at UMass Boston (1:00 p.m.). Colby-Sawyer puts its unbeaten record on the line Wednesday at home against Regis College in a Commonwealth Coast Conference match (4:00 p.m.).
