PSU Womens Tennis too much for Southern Maine
- Freshman Jill Deyermond (Atkinson, N.H.) and junior Rachel Xavier (Meredith, N.H.) won two matches each Tuesday afternoon to lead the Plymouth State University women's tennis team to a 6-3 victory over the University of Southern Maine in a Little East Conference match at the P.E. Center Courts.
Deyermond won her match at #3 singles in straight sets, while Xavier did the same at #4 singles, improving her season record to 6-0. The two also teamed up for an 8-2 pro-set victory at #2 doubles.
Other singles winners for PSU included sophomore Erica Huckins (Plymouth, N.H.) at #2, and junior Sarah Cole (North Waterboro, Maine) at #5, as she improved her season record to 5-1. The tandem of sophomore Ashley Gorman (Cumberland, R.I.) and junior Liz Duell (Hope Valley, R.I.) also captured a win for the Panthers at #3 doubles.
Junior Katie Welch (Calais, Maine) registered a pair of wins for the Huskies, posting a victory at #1 singles and with classmate Catie McCarthy (Newport, Vt.) at #1 doubles. Junior Emily Straubel (Littleton, Maine) also picked up a win for USM at #6 singles.
PSU, 3-3 overall and 3-1 in conference play, plays three more home matches this week - Endicott on Thursday (4:00 p.m.), Rhode Island College on Friday (3:30 p.m.) and Castleton State on Sunday (1:00 p.m.). USM, 1-7 overall and 1-4 in the LEC, returns to Maine for home matches Thursday against Colby-Sawyer (3:00 p.m.) and Saturday vs. Western Connecticut (12:00 p.m.).
