PSU Womens Tennis edges Colby-Sawyer
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Junior Erica Huckins (Plymouth, N.H.) won both of her matches Thursday afternoon to lead the Plymouth State University women's tennis team to a 5-4 victory over Colby-Sawyer College in the Panthers' home opener at the P.E. Center Courts.
The two teams split the six singles matches, but PSU earned the team victory by winning two of the three doubles encounters. The Panthers and Chargers are now both 1-2 in dual matches on the season.
Huckins teamed with senior Whitney O'Leary (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) to capture the No. 1 doubles match. Seniors Sarah Cole (North Waterboro, Maine) and Liz Duell (Hopewell Valley, R.I.) also combined to win their match for PSU at No. 3 doubles, while the Colby-Sawyer tandem of senior Tarren Bailey (Guilford, Conn.) and freshman Meghan Welch (New Boston, N.H.) took the match at No. 2 doubles.
Singles winners for PSU included Huckins at No. 3, senior Rachel Xavier (Meredith, N.H.) at No. 4, and freshman Meghan Rodier (Francestown, N.H./ConVal) at No. 6. The Chargers got singles wins from junior Alex Hardenbrook (Kennebunk, Maine) at No. 1, Welch at No. 2, and sophomore Haley Pittinger (Merrimack, N.H.) at No. 5.
The Panthers are back in action Saturday in the Little East Conference opener against UMass Dartmouth at the P.E. Center Courts (12:30 p.m.). The Chargers are idle until next Tuesday (Sept. 13) when they travel to Endicott for their first Commonwealth Coast Conference match (3:30 p.m.) Plymouth State 5, Colby-Sawyer 4
