PSU Womens Tennis comes up short against Castleton
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The Castleton State College women's tennis team remained undefeated on the season Tuesday afternoon with a 7-2 non-conference victory over Plymouth State University at the P.E. Center Courts.
The Spartans swept the three doubles matches, then put the match away with four singles wins. CSC improved to 7-0 this season, while PSU dropped to 2-5.
Freshmen Michelle Podnecky (Woodstock, Vt.) and Kate Bucci (Wakefield, R.I.) remained perfect on the season for Castleton, teaming up for a win at No. 1 doubles and taking the No. 1 and No. 3 singles matches, respectively. Podnecky and Bucci are both 7-0 on the season in both singles and doubles.
Sophomore Mary Kay Capone (May's Landing, N.J.) also kept her undefeated mark intact for the Spartans, winning at No. 5 singles to improve to 6-0 and teaming with classmate Brittni Racine (Leicester, Vt.) for a victory at No. 3 doubles. Junior Charla Klaas (Bloomingdale, Pa.) was also a double-winner for Castleton, winning in straight sets at No. 2 singles and earning a victory at No. 2 doubles with her partner, senior Emily Hallett (Medway, Mass.).
PSU picked up a pair of singles wins by junior Amanda Arponen (Plymouth, Mass.) at No. 4 and freshman Sandy Capecelatro (Brewster, N.Y.) at No. 6.
PSU returns to Little East Conference action on Saturday with a visit to UMass Boston for a 1:00 p.m. contest. The match will be played at Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, Mass. The Spartans are back on the court Sunday at Bay Path College in Longmeadow, Mass.
