PSU Women’s Tennis drops opener at Endicott

BEVERLY, Mass. - The Plymouth State University women's tennis team dropped its opening match of the season Thursday afternoon, 7-2, to the Gulls of Endicott College in a non-conference contest on Endicott's South Campus Courts.

The defending the Commonwealth Coast Conference champions, Endicott has now defeated PSU five straight years since the Panthers last won in 2004.  It was the season opener for both schools.

The Panthers picked up their only wins of the day at No. 3 doubles and No. 1 singles.  Sophomore Lydia Smith (Marblehead, Mass.) and freshman Karli Kesson (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) teamed up for an 8-4 victory at third doubles.  Freshman Sara Burke (Barrington, R.I.) also posted a default victory at No. 1 singles when her opponent could not continue after winning the first set tiebreaker. The Gulls won the top two doubles matches and swept the other five singles matches.

Plymouth State will look for its first win of the season Saturday in a visit to the University of Southern Maine for the Little East Conference opener. The Gulls get back to action Saturday when they host Anna Maria College.
