PLYMOUTH, N.H. - One of the top players on the Plymouth State University women's tennis team was honored Monday with the top weekly honor from the Little East Conference.
Sophomore Laura Donovan (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) was named LEC Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the week ending Sunday, Oct. 4. She helped the Panthers to a 1-1 week, including a victory in their only LEC match.
A 5'3" sophomore, Donovan (right) went 3-0 for the week, including a pair of wins at No. 2 singles. She won in straight sets (7-6, 6-0) in singles in PSU's 5-2 non-conference loss to Colby-Sawyer on Tuesday, and she won at both No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles in PSU's 7-2 win Saturday over UMass Boston. She lost only three games against the Beacons, as she won 6-0, 6-3 in singles and teamed up with classmate Lydia Smith (Marblehead, Mass.) for an 8-0 win in doubles.
Donovan has posted a 5-1 record in singles this season and shares the team lead in victories. She has also upped her career record to 9-8. Donovan is 3-3 in doubles this fall, including 3-1 since joining together with Smith.
The Panthers, 2-6 overall and 1-3 in conference matches, play three matches this week - a non-conference encounter Tuesday at home against Lyndon State College (3:30 p.m.) and LEC matches Thursday at Salem State College (3:30 p.m.) and Saturday at Rhode Island College (12:00 p.m.)
