Two PSU Womens Tennis players receive All-LEC honors
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The top two players on the
Plymouth State University women's tennis team were honored by the
Little East Conference Tuesday in recognition for their outstanding
seasons in 2009.
Sophomore Laura Donovan (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) was named Women's Tennis All-LEC Second Team at No. 2 singles, and freshman Sara Burke (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) was selected LEC Women's Tennis Rookie of the Year in a vote of the conference head coaches.
Donovan (right) enjoyed a solid season at No. 2 singles,
posting an 8-2 overall record and a 5-1 mark against LEC
opponents. After dropping her opening match of the season at
Endicott College, Donovan rattled off eight straight victories
before dropping her final match to LEC champion Western
Connecticut. Donovan now has a career singles record of 12-9.
Burke (left) was one of three freshmen in the conference
to compete primarily at No. 1 singles, and she defeated both of her
classmates in the top position in straight sets. She posted
an overall record of 5-6, including a 3-4 mark in the conference
circuit. She opened her career with three straight victories,
including a straight-set win over her Southern Maine opponent, and
she dropped four matches in the third set.
Burke and Donovan were the bright spots on a PSU team that started three freshmen and two sophomores and finished with a 3-9 overall record, 1-6 in conference play.
