Smith wins twice for Panthers, remains unbeaten in singles
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Lydia Smith (Marblehead, Mass.) won matches in both singles and doubles Wednesday afternoon to lead the Plymouth State University women’s tennis team to a 7-2 victory over Lyndon State College in a non-conference match at the P.E. Center’s indoor courts.
Plymouth State won its second match in a row to improve to 5-3 on the season, while Lyndon State dropped to 4-5. The match was originally scheduled to be played at Lyndon State but was moved to PSU’s indoor courts due to rain. PSU had an advantage because the Hornets had just five players.
Smith kept her perfect singles record intact, improving to 8-0 this season with a 7-6, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles. She also paired up with sophomore Rachel Figura (Cheshire, Conn.) for an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles as the Panther duo improved to 5-3 on the season. PSU also collected singles wins from junior Laura Donovan (Acton, Mass.) at No. 1, freshman Molly Heartfield (Dorset, Vt.) at No. 4, and freshman Jane Duggan (Saunderstown, R.I.) at No. 5.
The Hornets were led by senior Jenn Falsetti (Albany, N.Y.), who won her No. 2 singles match in straight sets. Sophomore Maria Parr (Montpelier, Vt.) and freshman Kayla Flynn (Johnston, R.I.) also picked up a win for Lyndon State at No. 2 doubles.
PSU returns to Little East Conference play this Saturday, hosting Rhode Island College at 1:00 p.m. in the final home match of the regular season. Lyndon State wraps up its regular season Saturday at Thomas College in Waterville, Maine (2:00 p.m.)
