PSU Women’s Tennis sweeps Worcester State
Panthers improve to 7-4; clinch playoff berth
WORCESTER, Mass. – The Plymouth State University women's tennis team improved to 7-4 on the season Saturday afternoon with an easy 9-0 victory over Worcester State University in a Little East Conference match held at Assumption College.
The Panthers also improved to 4-3 in conference play, officially clinching a spot in this year's LEC Tournament. The seven overall victories for PSU this season is the most since the Panthers won eight matches in both 2005 and 2006. Worcester State drops to 3-7 overall and 0-5 in the LEC.
Saturday's victory was particularly easy, as Worcester State was able to have only three players available for the match. PSU took forfeit victories in the bottom three singles slot as well as the bottom two doubles matches.
Junior Sara Burke and sophomore Molly Heartfield won their matches on the court. Burke won at No. 1 singles to improve her record to 7-4, including 6-1 against conference opponents. Heartfield was an easy winner at No. 3 singles and paired up with Burke for an 8-4 triumph at No. 1 doubles. Senior Lydia Smith also posted a win for PSU at No. 2 singles.
PSU wraps up the regular season this week with a pair of home matches – Thursday against Granite State foe Franklin Pierce University, and Saturday against LEC opponent UMass Boston on Senior Day at the P.E. Center Courts.
