Salem bounces PSU from LEC Women’s Tennis Tourney
Panthers finish season with 10-5 record
SALEM, Mass. – Second-seeded Salem State University defeated third-seeded Plymouth State University, 5-1, Saturday afternoon in the semifinal round of the Little East Conference Women's Tennis at SSU's Central Campus Courts.
The Vikings swept the doubles matches and needed only two singles victories for the win. Salem State (11-2) will face top-seeded Bridgewater State (12-1) for the LEC Championship, while PSU concludes its season with a 10-5 overall record.
Junior Sara Burke (Barrington, R.I.) recorded the only victory for PSU, winning her match at No. 1 singles in straight sets to cap an outstanding campaign. Burke won her last five singles matches to finish the year with a sparkling 11-4 record, including a 9-1 mark against LEC opponents. Burke's 11 wins is the most for the Panthers' No. 1 singles player in the program's history.
After Salem took all three doubles matches, senior Lauren Turenne (Reading, MA) won at No. 2 singles, 7-5, 6-0, for the clinching fifth point victory. Also earning a singles victory was sophomore Melissa Govertsen (Billerica, MA) in the number five singles spot.
