Burke represents Panthers on Second Team
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The top player on the Plymouth State University women's tennis team was recognized by the Little East Conference Monday for her outstanding performance during the 2011 season.
Junior Sara Burke was named to the Little East Women's Tennis All-Conference Second Team at No. 1 singles. Burke was an LEC Player of the Week earlier this season, and was the Little East Rookie of the Year in 2009.
PSU's top player the past three years, Burke finished this season with an 11-4 record at No. 1 singles, including a 7-1 mark against the top players in the conference. Her only LEC loss was to Bridgewater State University's Jenna Williamson, who is the LEC Player of the Year. Burke won her last five singles matches and nine of her last 10 to finish with 11 singles victories, the most for any PSU player in a season since 2006 and the most for PSU's top player since individual records began being tracked in 1994. She improved her career singles record to 21-16.
Burke was also successful this season at No. 1 doubles with sophomore Molly Heartfield. The Panther tandem finished with a 7-7 overall record in the top flight, including a 6-2 mark against LEC opponents.
PSU finished the regular season with a 10-5 overall record under seventh-year head coach Barb Rawlsky-Willett, setting the program record for wins in a season. The Panthers finished third in the LEC regular season race, and got knocked out of the LEC Tournament in the semifinals by eventual champion Salem State University.
