Panthers defeated by defending LEC regular season champs
BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University women's tennis team opened Little East Conference (LEC) play Saturday afternoon with an 8-1 victory over visiting Plymouth State University at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.
The Bears, who improve to 2-0 (1-0 LEC) on the year, won all three doubles matches and captured five of the six singles flights to secure the win. Plymouth State falls to 1-1 (1-1 LEC) on the young season.
In the marquis match of the day between the top two singles players in the LEC from 2011, BSU junior Jenna Williamson (Ludlow, Mass.) edged PSU senior Sara Burke (Barrington, R.I.) in third-set super-breaker, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 1-0 (10-7). Williamson defeated Burke by a similar score last year (6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8)), helping Williamson earn All-LEC First Team and Burke All-LEC Second Team at No. 1 singles.
Bridgewater's top doubles tandem of Williamson and senior Lauren Hopp (Darmouth, Mass.) posted an 8-5 win, while seniors Ashley Pereira (Assonet, Mass.) and Brittney Hislop (Burley, WA) at second doubles and freshman Alison Vautrin (Somerset, Mass.) and sophomore Rachael Eramo (Rowley, Mass.) at the third flight won 8-4 and 8-1, respectively.
The Bears also received straight set victories from Pereira at second singles, Vautrin at number four, Hopp at the fifth spot, and freshman Melissa Flynn (Stoneham, Mass.) at the sixth flight.
