Panthers power past Hornets
LYNDONVILLE, Vt. – The Plymouth State University women's tennis team got back on the winning track Thursday afternoon, defeating Lyndon State College in a non-conference match, 9-0, at the Dudley Bell Tennis Center.
The Panthers started the day with wins in all three doubles matches, although the Hornets put up a strong battle. Juniors Jane Duggan (Saunderstown, R.I.) and Chelsea Thibeault (Manchester, N.H./Central) took an 8-2 decision at No. 3 doubles while the freshman tandem of Nitsa Ioannides (El Cajon, Calif.) and Andra Dion (Ashland, N.H./Plymouth Regional) earned an 8-4 verdict at No. 2. Senior Sara Burke (Barrington, R.I.) and junior Molly Heartfield (Dorset, Vt.) were pushed to an 8-5 score in the top slot to complete the doubles sweep for PSU.
Thibeault and Duggan were the first two Panthers off the court as singles winners, capturing their matches at No. 6 and No. 5, respectively, and clinching the match for PSU. All six singles matches were completed in straight sets, with Burke winning at No. 1, Heartfield at No. 2, Ioannides at No. 3 and Dion recording her first career victory at No. 4.
PSU, 3-4 overall, returns to Little East Conference play this Saturday with an 11 a.m. home match against Western Connecticut State University at the PE Center Courts.
