PSU Women’s Tennis too strong for Castleton
Panthers power past Spartans in non-conference match
CASTLETON, Vt. – The Plymouth State University women's tennis squad used a team effort to defeat Castleton State College Wednesday afternoon, posting an 8-1 non-conference victory over the Spartans.
The Panthers started the afternoon by sweeping the three doubles matches, and put the outcome away by winning five of the singles encounters. The Panthers improve to 2-1 on the season while the Spartans are winless through five matches.
Five different Panther players won two matches each. Senior Molly Heartfield (Dorset, Vt.) led the way with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles after teaming with senior Jane Duggan (Saunderstown, R.I.) for an 8-3 decision at No. 1 doubles.
Sophomore Nitsa Ioannides (El Cajon, Calif.) and freshman Nikki Lund (Hingham, Mass.) teamed up to capture the No. 2 doubles match, and both followed with singles wins, Ioannides at No. 2 and Lund at No. 4. Senior Chelsea Thibeault (Manchester, N.H./Central) and freshman Rachel Gustafson (Belchertown, Mass.) enjoyed similar success, pairing up for a win at No. 3 singles followed by victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
PSU plays again on Saturday with a key Little East Conference match at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (1:00 p.m.) UMass Dartmouth was picked second and PSU fourth in the LEC preseason poll.
