PSU Women’s Tennis falls to UMass Dartmouth in LEC match
Ioannides/Lund win for Panthers in doubles, Duggan wins in singles
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's tennis team cruised to a 7-2 victory over visiting Plymouth State University Saturday afternoon in a Little East Conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex.
Seniors Angela Pollard (Portsmouth, R.I.), Allison Furtado (Fairhaven, Mass.) and Elizabeth Cignoli (Springfield, Mass.) were each double-winners for the Corsairs. Pollard teamed with Furtado for a 8-2 win at number two doubles and then won her third singles match of the week, while Furtado earned a 6-1, 6-2 decision at number four singles. Cignoli, seeing her first action of the young season after returning from injury, teamed with freshman Rosalie Kimba (Milford, Mass.) for an 8-3 victory at number three doubles and then picked up a 6-1, 6-2 verdict at number six singles.
Plymouth State earned its points at number one doubles and number two singles. Sophomore Nitsa Ioannides (El Cajon, Calif.) and freshman Nikki Lund (Hingham, Mass.) recorded a victory at No. 1 doubles, and senior Jane Duggan (Saunderstown, RI) rallied from a 2-5 deficit to claim PSU's only singles win, 7-5, 6-2.
The Corsairs improved to 2-1 with the victory, while the Panthers dropped to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the LEC. UMass Dartmouth will return to action Tuesday when they travel to Providence to face 7-0 Rhode Island College in a Little East Conference match. Plymouth State gets back to action on Sunday, hosting Johnson State at the P.E. Center Courts (12 noon).
