Panthers win second straight, improve to 4-2
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University women's tennis team won its second match in a row Wednesday afternoon, defeating Lydon State College, 8-1, in a non-conference match at the P.E. Center Courts.
Seniors Jane Duggan (Saunderstown, R.I.) and Chelsea Thibeault (Manchester, N.H.) and freshmen Nikki Lund (Hingham, Mass.) and Rachel Gustafson (Belchertown, Mass.) were all double winners as the Panthers improved to 4-2 on the season.
Senior Kayla Flynn (Johnston, R.I.) recorded the Hornets' only victory with an impressive 6-0, 6-1 decision at No. 1 singles, but Lyndon State dropped to 3-4 overall.
The Panthers took a 3-0 lead by sweeping the doubles matches. Duggan and Thibeault were easy winners at No. 2, and Gustafson and sophomore Peyton Smith (Stuttgart, Germany) were right behind with a win at No. 3. Lund and sophomore Nitsa Ioannides (El Cajon, Calif.) completed the doubles sweep for the Panthers with a tiebreaker victory at No. 1, 9-8 (7-2).
Thibeault and Lund clinched the match for PSU with straight-set singles wins at No. 4 and No. 3, respectively. Flynn put the Hornets on the board with her win at No. 1, but PSU closed out the match by winning the final three, Gustafson at No. 5, junior Rosalie DiRado (Gansevoort, N.Y.) at No. 6, and Duggan at No. 2.
Gustafson leads the team with five singles wins (5-1), while Lund and Thibeault are both 4-2. Ioannides and Lund are 4-0 in PSU's top singles slot.
The Panthers return to Little East Conference play Saturday with a visit to Western Connecticut State University for a 1:00 p.m. match. Lyndon State returns home to host Colby-Sawyer College Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the Dudley Bell Tennis Center.
