PSU Women’s Tennis defeats Western Conn. for third straight win
Ioannides, Lund lead Panthers to Little East victory
DANBURY, Conn. – The Plymouth State University women's tennis team posted its third straight victory Saturday afternoon, defeating Western Connecticut State University, 7-2, in a Little East Conference match at WCSU's Westside Courts.
The Panthers began the day by sweeping the three doubles matches, although the Colonials pushed two of the matches to scores of 8-5. PSU clinched the victory with wins of four of the six singles matches, all in straight sets, improving to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in LEC play this season. Western Conn. drops to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in the Little East.
Sophomore Nitsa Ioannides (El Cajon, Calif.) and freshman Nikki Lund (Hingham, Mass.) led the Panthers to the win. They teamed together for a hard-fought 8-5 victory at No. 1 doubles, and they each followed with an impressive singles victory, Ioannides a 6-0, 6-0 winner at No. 1 singles and Lund 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3.
Senior Chelsea Thibeault (Manchester, N.H.) and freshman Rachel Gustafson (Belchertown, Mass.) were also double-winners on the day for PSU. Thibeault teamed with senior Jane Duggan (Saunderstown, R.I.) for an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles and came back with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles; Gustafson paired up with sophomore Peyton Smith (Stuttgart, Germany) to take the No. 3 doubles match and followed with a 6-0,6-1 triumph at No. 5 singles.
Plymouth State returns home to host Salem State in a key conference match Wednesday at the P.E. Center Courts (3:30 p.m.)
