Little East honors for PSU Soccer, Volleyball and Tennis
Herbert, McLaughlin, Pelton, Lund earn recognition for Panthers
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Four Plymouth State University student-athletes were recognized by the Little East Conference Monday with top weekly honors for their performances last week.
Sophomore Alex Herbert (Lexington, Mass.) and freshman Josh McLaughlin (Holliston, Mass.) were named LEC Men's Soccer Defensive Player and Co-Rookie of the Week, respectively; senior Cassie Pelton (Brookline, N.H.) was selected LEC Women's Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week; and freshman Nikki Lund (Hingham, Mass.) was tabbed as LEC Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week.
A 5'4", 125-pound sophomore, Herbert helped anchor the defense as the Panthers did not surrender a goal in two games, including a double-overtime 0-0 tie with Tufts, which was ranked #2 in New England and #23 nationally in Division III. He was responsible for marking Tufts top offensive player, and he also scored the game-winning goal in PSU's 2-0 LEC win Saturday over Southern Maine, breaking a scoreless tie in the 57th minute.
A 6'0", 170-pound freshman, McLaughlin played every minute in the midfield of the two PSU shutouts as the Panthers did not allow a goal. Plymouth State surrendered just 15 shots in 110 minutes against Tufts, and gave up just eight shots in a regulation victory over Southern Maine.
A 5'6" libero, Pelton averaged 4.78 digs per set in a 3-0 week for the Panthers, including a 3-0 LEC win over UMass Dartmouth. She recorded 22 digs in a non-conference win over Lasell, and she made 16 digs in Saturday's LEC win over UMD.
A 5'8" freshman, Lund went 2-0 at both No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles last week, helping PSU to a 2-0 record. She lost only two singles games in her two victories, winning 6-0, 6-0 against Lyndon State and 6-0, 6-2 against Western Connecticut. She also teamed with senior Nitsa Ioannides (El Cajon, Calif.) for victories at No. 1 doubles against Lyndon State and Western Conn. It is Lund's second LEC Rookie of the Week selection this season.
The Panther men's soccer and women's tennis teams will be home in action this week, as the soccer team hosts Norwich University Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. and Western Connecticut State University Saturday at 11:00 a.m. and the tennis team hosts Salem State University Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
