PSU Women’s Tennis cruises past Lyndon State

Panthers continue with unbeaten season

            LYNDONVILLE, Vt. – The undefeated Plymouth State University women's tennis squad visited Lyndon State College Wednesday and defeated the Hornets b y a score of 9-0.

            The Panthers improved to 6-0 on the season, with five of the six wins coming by a 9-0 score. The 6-0 record is the best start to a season since the 2002 Panthers also opened up with six straight wins.

            The sister duo of Zara and Sunny Jakubas (Califon, N.J./Voorhees) continued to impress for PSU, sweeping the top two singles matches and the No. 1 doubles match. Zara is now 6-0 at No. 1 singles, Sunny is 5-1 at No. 2 singles, and they are perfect (6-0) at No. 1 doubles. 

            Also winning singles matches for PSU were freshman Cassidy Wells (Colchester, Vt.) at No. 3, sophomore Nikki Lund (Hingham, Mass.) at No. 4, junior Nitsa Ioannides (El Cajon, Calif.) at No. 5, and senior Rosalie DiRado (Gansevoort, N.Y.) at No. 6.  Wells, Ioannides and DiRado all improved to 6-0 on the season while Lund is 5-1.

            Ioannides teamed with junior Peyton Smith (Stuttgart, Germany) for an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles, while freshmen Megan Wallace (Moultonborough, N.H.) and Jade Westlake (Goffstown, N.H.) made their first appearance in the Panther line-up and posted an 8-0 victory at No. 3 doubles.

            PSU returns home to host the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in a Little East Conference match at the Holderness School. The Hornets return to action Sunday when they travel to New London, N.H. to face North Atlantic Conference foe Colby-Sawyer College at 12 p.m.
