PSU Women’s Tennis to defend Little East Conference title

Panthers expected to contend, picked third in 2015 preseason poll

             PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- The Plymouth State University women's tennis team will be out to defend its Little East Conference championship this fall, and will be in contention according to the LEC Preseason Coaches' poll.

            The defending regular season and tournament champion Panthers collected the most first place votes in the poll with five while finishing third in the overall point standings at 66. Rhode Island College was voted by the league's nine head coaches as the favorite with 73 points and two first place nods. Bridgewater State garnered second place, totaling 67 points with two first place votes.

            Plymouth State went unbeaten in the LEC last year, capping off the season with an LEC Tournament victory, the third in program history. The Panthers will again be a league contender, and return the LEC's best player from 2014. Senior Zara Jakubas (Califon, N.J.) was tabbed the LEC Player and Rookie of the Year last season, the first player in league history to receive both honors in the same season. On the year, Jakubas was 14-0 for the Panthers at the No. 1 singles flight and also went unbeaten with sister Sunny Jakubas (Califon, N.J.) at No. 1 doubles. Sunny was also a First Team All-LEC selection as she posted an 8-0 mark at No. 2 singles (13-1 overall) as a freshman. The Panthers begin the 12th year under head coach Barbara Rawlsky-Willett, the 2014 Coach of the Year.

            Conference play in LEC women's tennis will consist of each team meeting each other once during the regular season. The top six teams in the final regular season conference standings will compete in the Little East Championship, with the top two seeds receiving first round byes and home court advantage in the semifinals. The Championship match is scheduled for October 24, with the winner receiving the conference's automatic bid to the 2016 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship.
