Panthers win two of three doubles matches in setback
CASTLETON, Vt. – The Plymouth State University women's tennis team was defeated by Castleton University Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action, 6-3, falling to the Spartans for the first time in three years.
The win moves the Spartans to 4-1, while the Panthers drop to 1-4 on the season.
Plymouth State won two of the three tightly-contested doubles matches but the Spartans came back to take the top five singles matches to secure the team victory.
Senior Peyton Smith (Stuttgart, Germany) and freshman Irene Ireme (Concord, N.H.) posted a 9-7 victory for PSU at No. 2 doubles, and freshman Megan Wheeler (Manchester, N.H./Central) and sophomore Megan Wallace (Moultonborough, N.H.) recorded an 8-6 triumph at No. 3 doubles.
The Spartans got a boost from the top doubles pairing of Sara Novenstern and Jackie Lisak, who battled from behind to pull off a 9-7 win.
The Spartans would turn their day around in singles play, taking five out of the six matches. PSU's lone singles win came in the sixth flight, where freshman Lily O'Connor (Salem, N.H.) finished with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph.
Plymouth State returns to Little East Conference action Saturday, hosting the University of Massachusetts Boston at 1:00 p.m. at the Holderness School Courts.
