Jakubas, Smith lead Panthers to fifth straight win
HOLDERNESS, N.H. – The Plymouth State University women's tennis team captured its fifth consecutive victory Tuesday afternoon, defeating Lyndon State College, 9-0, in a non-conference Senior Day match at the Holderness School Courts.
Seniors Zara Jakubas (Califon, N.J.) and Peyton Smith (Stuttgart, Germany) celebrated their final regular season home match with a pair of victories each. They teamed together at No. 1 doubles for an 8-1 triumph, and they each won in straight sets at No. 1 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Jakubas is now 7-1 this season in singles and 21-1 in her career, while Smith is 3-1 this season in singles.
All 10 players on the PSU roster registered victories in the match. Junior Rachel Gustafson (Belchertown, Mass.) teamed with freshman Rachel Fillion (Littleton, N.H.) for an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles after freshmen Megan Wheeler (Manchester, N.H./Central) and Lily O'Connor (Salem, N.H.) posted an 8-1 decision at No. 3.
Joining Zara Jakubas and Smith in the PSU victory column in singles were sophomore Sunny Jakubas (Califon, N.J.) at No. 2, freshmen Kelley Corson (Exeter, N.H.) and Irene Ireme (Concord, N.H.) at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, and sophomore Megan Wallace (Moultonborough, N.H.) in the No. 5 slot.
PSU returns to Little East Conference action Saturday with a key match at LEC-leading Rhode Island College (1:00 p.m.) The Panthers edged RIC in last year's LEC Championship match. Lyndon State wraps up its season with a 3-9 overall record.
