#3 seeded Panthers to visit #2 Bridgewater for semifinal round
HOLDERNESS, N.H. – Senior Zara Jakubas (Califon, N.J.) and sophomore Sunny Jakubas (Califon, N.J.) won two matches apiece Tuesday afternoon to lead third-seeded Plymouth State University to a 5-0 victory over sixth-seeded Worcester State University in a Little East Conference Women's Tennis Tournament quarterfinal match at the Holderness School Courts.
Plymouth State swept the three doubles matches, and the Jakubas sisters closed out the match with straight-set victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. The Panthers, who narrowly defeated the Lancers 5-4 in Worcester just three days ago, improve to 9-5 on the season while Worcester State completes its campaign at 5-10.
PSU, the defending LEC Tournament champion, will travel to second-seeded Bridgewater State University on Thursday for a 2:00 p.m. semifinal match. The Panthers were edged by the Bears in the regular season match, 5-4, on Sept. 12.
Zara Jakubas and freshman Irene Ireme (Concord, N.H.) gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead with an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles, and Sunny and junior Rachel Gustafson (Belchertown, Mass.) won at No. 2 doubles a short while later, 8-4. Freshman Kelley Corson (Exeter, N.H.) and senior Peyton Smith (Stuttgart, Germany) completed the doubles sweep for PSU, winning in the No. 3 slot, 8-3.
Sunny won her singles match at No. 2, 6-0, 6-2, and Zara closed out the team decision with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 1. Both Jakubases are 10-1 in singles this season, while Zara is 24-1 in her career and Sunny is 23-2.
Top-seeded Rhode Island College will host the other semifinal on Thursday, and the LEC Championship match is slated for Saturday at the highest remaining seed.
