PSU Women's Tennis falls to Bridgewater State in Little East Tournament

Defending champion Panthers eliminated in semifinal

            BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Second-seeded Bridgewater State University posted a 5-3 win over third-seeded Plymouth University Thursday afternoon in the semifinal round of the Little East Conference Women's Tennis Tournament at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.

             The Bears (10-5) advance to the tournament championship match for the seventh time in the last eight years. Bridgewater will host #4 UMass Dartmouth on Saturday with an NCAA Tournament bid on the line. UMass knocked off top-seeded Rhode Island College, 5-4, in the other semifinal match.

            Defending tournament champion Plymouth State ends the season with an overall record of 9-6.

             The Bears led 2-1 after doubles play and then received straight set singles win from freshman Hayley Anderson (San Antonio, Texas) and sophomores Alison Scagnelli (Sutton, Mass.) and Bojana Roman (Somerset, Mass.) to earn the victory.

            Anderson earned a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at the third flight to push the BSU lead to 3-1. The Panthers won the next two matches to even the score as senior Zara Jakubas (Califon, N.J.) posted a 6-1, 6-1 straight set triumph at number one singles and sophomore Sunny Jakubas (Califon, N.J.) also won in straight sets at two singles, 6-1, 6-2. Both Zara and Sunny complete the season with 11-1 records in singles. Zara winds up her career with a 25-1 singles mark, all at No. 1 singles while Sunny is 24-2 in her career, all at No. 2.

            Zara also paired with freshman Irene Ireme (Concord, N.H.) for an 8-5 win at first doubles against the Bears. That duo finished this season with a 7-4 doubles record for PSU.

            BSU gained its fourth team point when Roman cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win at number five, Scagnelli secured the fifth and deciding point with a 6-2, 6-4 decision at the fourth flight.

            Scagnelli and Roman also teamed up for an 8-0 victory at third doubles, while senior captain Alison Vautrin (Somerset, Mass.) and sophomore Olivia Lakes (Dorchester, Mass.) recorded an 8-4 win at the second doubles flight.
