Perez, Goulette post top-five finishes for Panthers
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Junior Diana Perez (Cranston, R.I.) and senior Rileigh Goulette (Saint Albans, Vt.) posted top-five finishes as the Plymouth State University women's indoor track & field team competed at the Wesleyan University Invitational at Bacon Field House on Saturday.
The meet was a non-team scoring event featuring 18 NCAA Division III teams from throughout New England and NCAA Division I Bryant University.
Perez posted the Panthers' best finish of the day, taking second in the long jump with a new personal record distance of 5.21 meters (17' 1.25"). The distance was enough to qualify for the NCAA Division III New England Championships in two weeks. Perez also ran an 8.74 60-meter dash to place 23rd, while taking the anchor leg of the 4x400 relay team that finished seventh with a time of 4:37.79.
Goulette, who also ran in the 4x400 relay, took fifth in the 1000-meter run with a time of 3:15.63. Freshman Jessica Ewing (Amherst, N.H.) and junior Nora Robichaud (Hampstead, N.H.) also joined the relay team. Robichaud also posted a season-best time of 1:05.59 in the 400-meter dash to place 23 rd.
Junior Jillian Edwards (Exeter, N.H.) had a strong day placing tenth in both the shot put and the weight throw. She set a new personal record with a heave of 10.71 meters (35' 1.75") in the shot put, and reached 12.01 meters (39' 5.00") in the weight throw.
Junior Kayla Gould (Orford, N.H.) set a personal record on her way to an 11th place finish in the pole vault, clearing a height of 2.60 meters (8' 6.25").
The Panthers had five other personal-bests on the day. Freshman Deborah Ashokeji (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) topped her previous mark in the 600-meter run by almost four seconds, finishing in 2:01.86. Juniors Lora Giguere (Tolland, Conn.) and Haley Dennis (Coventry, R.I.) both set new marks in the mile run. Giguere finished in 5:47.40, with Dennis just behind her at 5:53.28.
The Panthers will travel to Rhode Island College on Saturday to take part in the Little East Conference and New England Alliance Championships.
