Dion leads Panthers with strong finish in 200 meters
BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Plymouth State University women's track & field team posted some strong performances Saturday while placing ninth out of 10 teams Saturday at the Bowdoin University Invitational at the Mount Ararat Track.
Senior Cierra Dion (Manchester, N.H.) lowered her personal best time in the 200 meters by over a full second, finishing in 28.34 seconds to place 11th among the 36 runners. She was also 12th in the high Jump (4'7.75").
Freshmen Ashley Bergeron (Berlin, N.H.) and Haley Dennis (Coventry, R.I.) hit Little East Conference qualifying marks in the mile run with times of 5:59.42 and 6:04.73, respectively. Freshman Lora Giguere (Tolland, Conn.) and junior Sarah Uhlman (Ashland, N.H.) accomplished the same standard in the 3000 meters in 11:43.90 and 12:00.06, respectively. Freshmen Nora Robichaud (Hampstead, N.H.) ran her season-best time in the 400 meters (1:06.08).
"This meet caps off a very successful two week winter break camp for us, said PSU head coach John Ostler. "Throughout camp we've been practicing twice a day and pouring effort and energy into every session. We competed today with some heavy legs but the effort was there across the board. The work we did during camp and the effort and grit we competed with today will pay off when we hit championship meets in a month. I'm looking forward to seeing our team bounce back with fresh legs for our final two qualifying meets."
MIT won the event with 203 points, while runner-up Merrimack College (90) edged third-place Tufts (89). PSU scored five points, just behind Keene State College (7) and ahead of the University of Maine Farmington (2).
PSU will compete again next Saturday at the Tufts Stampede. The Panthers are in their first season as a varsity track & field program.
