Baillargeon, Bergeron, Robichaud with top performances for Panthers
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Plymouth State University women's track & field team opened the outdoor season Saturday at the Corsair Classic, a non-scoring meet at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth that included more than a dozen teams.
The Panthers sent a full contingent to the meet, and achieved eight top-10 finishes in individual events, as well as finishing in the top six in both relay races.
The top performances by Plymouth State were fifth-place finishes by three freshmen -- Selena Baillargeon (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) in the shot put (10.81 meters/35'5.75"), Ashley Bergeron (Berlin, N.H.) in the 5,000 meters (20:16.66), and Nora Robichaud (Hampstead, N.H.) in the 400 meter hurdles (1:17.06).
Sophomore Rileigh Goulette (St. Albans, Vt.) and freshman Jess Conant (Canton, Maine) led a contingent of Panther runners in the 800 meters, placing sixth and eighth, respectively, in times of 2:33.71 and 2:39.02.
Freshman Brianna Warnick (Derry, N.H.) and sophomore Amanda Oullette (Bedford, N.H.) earned seventh-place finishes in field events for PSU, Warnick in the triple jump (9.26 meters/30'4.75") and Oullette in the discus (28.47 meters/93'5"). Freshman Diana Perez (Cranston, R.I.) finished 10th in the long jump (4.47 meters/14'8").
PSU will compete again next Saturday at the Amherst College Invitational.
The Panther women are in their first year as a varsity program. Plymouth State had men's track and field in the late 1960s and 1970s before discontinuing the program prior to the 1980 season.
