Baillargeon posts ECAC qualifying performance for Panthers
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Freshman Selena Baillargeon (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) posted an outstanding performance in the shot put Saturday afternoon to lead the Plymouth State University women's track & field team at the Little East Conference Championships and the New England Alliance Championships held at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
Baillargeon captured fourth place in the shot put Saturday with a personal-best mark of 12.11 meters (39'8.75"). That mark qualifies her for the ECAC Championships in three weeks at Westfield State University. Baillargeon had previously qualified for next Saturday's New England Division III Championships.
The Panthers finished in seventh place in the Little East scoring with 21 points. The University of Southern Maine took the team title with 203 points, followed by runner-up Keene State College with 128. PSU placed 11th out of 12 schools in the Alliance scoring, besting only Massachusetts Maritime Academy, as Southern Maine outscored Westfield State University for the title.
Other top 10 finishes for the Panthers included a fifth place in the 3000 meter steeplechase by freshman Ashley Bergeron (Berlin, N.H.) in a time of 12:46.50; and an eighth-place performance by classmate Nora Robichaud (Hampstead, N.H.) in the 400 meter hurdles in a personal-best time of 1:10.27, which was less than a half-second off the New England Championships qualifying mark.
Baillargeon and PSU's sprint relay team will represent the Panthers at next weekend's New England Championships at Springfield College.
The Panther women are in their first year as a varsity program. Plymouth State had men's track and field in the late 1960s and 1970s before discontinuing the program prior to the 1980 season.
