Moira Long Named Volleyball and Softball Coach

PLYMOUTH, N.H.- Plymouth State College has named a new women's volleyball and softball coach, according to Panther athletic director Steve Bamford.

Moira Long is the newest member of the Panther coaching staff. Long comes to Plymouth State after serving the past year as women's volleyball and softball coach at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA.

"Seldom do you attract a quality individual like Moira who has head coaching experience in both sports," said Bamford. "She emerged out of a very strong finalist group, and she is a high-energy person who has already shown in her brief coaching career an ability to recruit successfully."

A 1994 graduate of Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY, where she was a four-year varsity letterwinner in volleyball, Long earned her master's degree in Sport Management from Springfield College in 1997 before taking the position at Dickinson College last summer. She guided the Red Devil volleyball squad to a 7-20 record last season, and led the softball team to a 20-10 record and an ECAC post-season berth.

"I am very excited to come to Plymouth State," said Long. "The school has such a great athletic and academic reputation. It's a great opportunity for me, and I can't wait to get there and get started."

Long actually started her coaching career while at Marist College, guiding the men's club volleyball program for two years from 1992-94. She started the men's volleyball program at Western New England College in Springfield from 1995-96, and was a graduate assistant women's volleyball coach at Springfield College for two years while earning her master's degree. She also held the position of interim head women's volleyball coach at Springfield in the spring of 1997.

"What impressed us most were her people skills and ability to relate well to the student-athletes on our interview committee," said Bamford. "Her organizational skills and her strong work ethic bode well for our future success in both our women's volleyball and softball programs. I am confident Moira will eventually elevate these programs to the status of being regionally dominant and nationally competitive."

Long takes over the volleyball program from Mariann Hunter, PSC's assistant coach the past two years who resigned from the head coaching position in June, only months after accepting the top job. Long assumes softball coaching duties from Robin Payne, who coached the Panthers on the diamond the past six seasons.
