PSC picked third in LEC pre-season poll

GORHAM, Maine - Western Connecticut State University netted the top spot in the 2000 Little East Conference volleyball coaches preseason poll. The Colonials, defending regular season and tournament champions, captured seven first place votes and 78 of a possible 80 points in a near unanimous selection.

Eastern Connecticut nipped Plymouth State by one point 58-57, for second place. ECSU's Warriors received the remaining first place vote.

UMass Boston and Southern Maine tied for the fourth spot as each tallied 30 points. UMass Dartmouth secured sixth with 27 points. Keene State finished seventh and Rhode Island College eighth.

Six teams will qualify for the Little East tournament. Numbers one and two will receive first round byes. Number four will host number five and number three will host number six in the quarterfinals November 1. The two winners advance to the semifinals November 4 on the campus of the regular season champion. The championship match is scheduled for 12:00 noon Sunday November 5 at the same site.

For the first time in history of the LEC the tournament champion will receive and automatic bid to the NCAA Division III national volleyball tournament.
