LEWISTON, Maine - Plymouth State College finished with a 1-3 record Friday and Saturday at the Bates Invitational Volleyball Tournament. The outcome gives PSC a 10-6 overall record.
The Panthers were defeated in the first match of Friday's pool-play, 3-1, by Bates, which is ranked third in the NCAA Division III New England poll. PSC was then knocked off by defending Little East Conference champion Western Connecticut, 3-1, putting the Panthers in the bronze bracket for Saturday's play.
Plymouth State won its opening match on Saturday, a 3-2 decision over Bowdoin, but lost the bracket title match to Oneonta State, 3-1.
MIT captured the title of the 12-team tourney, defeating Bates and Tufts, 3-0, in the championship bracket. The All-Tournament Team included just six players, including Plymouth State outside hitter Carin LaValley (Northfield, N.H.).
LaValley was a consistent and powerful hitter in all four matches. She finished with 63 kills and just 14 errors in 131 attempts. She also recorded 56 digs, eight service aces and three blocks. LaValley has earned All-Tournament Team honors at nine different tournaments in her career, including three this season.
Plymouth State plays a Little East Conference match Tuesday (Oct. 2) at UMass Dartmouth (6:00 p.m.), then participates in the Eastern Connecticut Tournament next Friday-Saturday (Oct. 5-6) in Willimantic, Conn.
