PSC splits LEC pair at ECSU

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. - Plymouth State College split a pair of Little East Conference women's volleyball matches Saturday, falling in a thrilling five-game decision to Eastern Connecticut State University and then rebounding with a four-game victory over Rhode Island College.

After dropping the opening game against ECSU, 30-26, the Panthers captured the next two games (30-26, 30-25) to take the lead. The Warriors came back to win the fourth game, 30-28, and edge the Panthers in the decisive fifth game, 15-12.

PSC started out slowly in the RIC match, dropping the opening game, 30-20. The Panthers regrouped and took three straight from the Anchorwomen, 30-26, 31-29, 31-29.

The split decision leaves PSC with a 15-11 overall record, and a 4-2 mark in LEC matches. ECSU is now 19-10 overall and 6-1 in the conference, and RIC is 10-20 and 2-5.

With PSC's top hitter, Carin LaValley (Northfield, N.H.), still sidelined with an injury, sophomore Becky Landry (Nashua, N.H.) has excelled for the Panthers. She recorded 24 kills against Eastern Conn., and then registered a school-record 27 kills in the RIC match. She had only seven errors in 91 attempts for a sparkling .474 hitting percentage. Landry also smacked seven service aces, five blocks and 13 digs against ECSU.

The Panthers also got 14, 13 and 12 digs, respectively, in the Eastern Conn match from sophomores Amber Greenlaw (Gilford, N.H.), Sonia Trudell (Somersworth, N.H.) and Lindsay Green (Guilford, Conn.). Senior setter Jessie O'Hearn (Tilton, N.H.) registered 35 assists, 10 digs and three aces.
