PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Plymouth State College defeated pesky UMass-Boston Wednesday, 31-29, 33-35, 30-19, 31-29 in the quarterfinals of the Little East Conference Volleyball Tournament at Foley Gymnasium.
PSC (17-13) advances to the semi-finals on Friday at top-seeded and regular season champion Western Connecticut State in Danbury, Conn. UMass-Boston ends its season at 15-17.
PSC, which defeated this same UMass-Boston team 3-1 earlier in the year, now has a 5-0 career record against the Beacons.
In the first game, the Panthers were down 28-22 but rebounded to tie at 29 behind the service of Amber Greenlaw (Gilford, N.H.), who served six straight points to get PSC back into the game.
After losing the second game 35-33, Plymouth State sprinted to a 6-0 lead in the third game and never looked back. UMass Boston almost forced a fifth game after coming from behind in the fourth game and tying the score at 28.
Leading the way for PSC was Becky Landry (Nashua, N.H.), Joanna Brothers (Meredith, N.H.) and Sonia Trudell (Somersworth, N.H.) who registered 16, 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Trudell added 20 digs while teammate Jessie O'Hearn (Tilton, N.H.) chipped in with 42 assists and seven service aces.
The championship match of the LEC Tournament is slated to start at 12 noon on Saturday at WCSU., with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
