PSC captures Super 8 Invitational title
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The Plymouth State College women's volleyball team won four consecutive matches Friday and Saturday to capture the championship of the Super 8 Invitational Tournament at Foley Gymnasium.
The Panthers defeated Mount Holyoke College in Saturday's semifinal match, 3-1 (27-30, 30-26, 30-17, 30-19), and then went on to post a 3-0 victory (30-23, 30-25, 30-18) over Johnson & Wales University in the championship match.
PSC was a perfect 2-0 in Friday's pool play, defeating Pine Manor College 3-0 (30-10, 30-12, 30-16) and Western New England College 3-0 (30-24, 30-11, 30-15).
Panther junior middle hitter Kate Shirey (Amherst, N.H.) was selected the tournament's Most Valuable Player, and was joined on the All-Tournament Team by PSC senior setter Jessie O'Hearn (Tilton, N.H.). Shirey registered 33 kills and eight blocks in the tournament, including eight kills in the championship match. O'Hearn posted 130 assists, nine service aces and 21 digs in the tourney, including four aces and nine digs in the title match.
The rest of the All-Tournament Team included Annmarie Proto and Shaina Eigen from Johnson & Wales, Rebecca Bailey from Mount Holyoke, and Brenda Post from Western New England.
Other strong players for PSC included junior hitters Sonia Trudell (Somersworth, N.H.) and Becky Landry (Nashua, N.H.) and freshman hitter Kelly Landry (Nashua, N.H.).
PSC, 4-0, has more tournament action next weekend when the team plays in the Western New England Tournament Friday and Saturday in Springfield, Mass.
