Panthers clinch second place in LEC

PLYMOUTH, N.H. -- Plymouth State College clinched second place in the Little East Conference standings Saturday by picking up a pair of wins over Eastern Connecticut State University, 30-18, 30-19, 30-23 and Rhode Island College, 30-20, 30-22, 30-22 in round robin play at Foley Gymnasium.

In the Panthers' three-game sweep over Eastern Connecticut, junior Becky Landry (Nashua, N.H.) had 15 kills, five service aces and no errors. Freshman Kelly Landry (Nashua, N.H.) chipped in with 12 kills while senior setter Jessie O'Hearn (Tilton, N.H.) had 28 assists and two service aces. It was only the second victory for PSC over ECSU in 11 career tries dating back to 1996.

PSC downed its second LEC rival later in the afternoon, a three-game decision over RIC. The Landry sisters combined for 25 kills, while junior Megan O'Conner (Rochester, N.Y.) had three service aces and O'Hearn kept the Panthers on pace with 35 assists.

The Panthers, 23-6 overall and 6-1 in conference play, will receive a first round bye in the upcoming LEC Tournament, which begins Nov. 6.

Plymouth State, which has won six of its last eight matches, rounds out its regular season next week, starting with its last home match on Tuesday (Oct. 29) against Salem State (6:00 p.m.). PSC then travels to Waltham, Mass on Nov. 1-2 for the Brandeis Tournament.
