PSC receives post-season berth

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State College received the first post-season berth in the seven-year history of the women’s volleyball program Monday when the Panthers were selected to host the 2002 ECAC Division III North Tournament.

The tournament is an eight-team field with quarterfinal, semifinal and championship single-elimination rounds. Ithaca University was selected as the number one seed in the tournament after finishing the regular-season with a 30-9 record.

Plymouth State, which enters the tournament with a 25-10 overall record, is the seventh seed but will host the two-day affair this Friday and Saturday at Foley Gymnasium. The Panthers were awarded home-court advantage after the top six seeds declined the opportunity to host the event.

The entire field includes top-seeded Ithaca, second-seeded Coast Guard (21-7), third-seeded RIT (26-15), fourth-seeded SUNY-Geneseo (24-12), fifth-seeded Smith (15-14), sixth-seeded Eastern Connecticut (22-15), PSC, and eighth-seeded Plattsburgh State (21-20). The four quarterfinal matches will be at PSC Friday at 5:00 and 7:00 p.m., with semifinals and championship match Saturday morning and afternoon at Foley Gym.

Plymouth State received the post-season berth after enjoying the most successful season in the program’s short history. The Panthers have already broken the school record for wins in a season, and the 6-1 mark and runner-up finish in the Little East Conference regular season this fall was PSC’s highest place to date. Plymouth State was knocked off by Eastern Connecticut in five games in the semifinals of last weekend’s LEC Tournament.

Led by fifth-year coach Moira Long, the Panthers have been consistently ranked in the New England Coaches’ poll this season. The Panthers are led by senior middle hitter Becky Landry (Nashua, N.H.), freshman outside hitter Kelly Landry (Nashua, N.H.) and senior setter Jessie O’Hearn (Tilton, N.H.), who were all named Little East Conference First Team All-Stars.
