PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The Plymouth State University women's volleyball team won its first two matches Friday in pool play at the Super 8 Invitational Tournament at Foley Gymnasium.
The Panthers defeated Johnson & Wales University in Friday's first match, 3-0 (30-28, 30-14, 30-15), and then went on to post a 3-0 victory (30-16, 30-12, 30-25) over Western New England College in the second match.
The final round of pool play begins Saturday at 9:00 a.m. PSU has clinched the top spot in Pool A, and will play a semifinal match at 11:00 a.m. The tournament championship match is slated for Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
Senior Sonia Trudell (Somersworth, N.H.) led the Panthers in the victory over Johnson & Wales, registering 10 kills and nine digs. Sophomore Kelly Landry (Nashua, N.H.) had nine kills, and sophomores Amanda Bagwell (Riverside, R.I.) and Kim Krause (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) contributed eight digs apiece. Bagwell also made 29 set assists in her first match as the Panther starting setter.
Senior Becky Landry (Nashua, N.H.) was the top hitter for PSU against WNEC, recording nine kills and only one error. Kelly Landry chipped in with eight kills and a team-high eight digs.
Senior hitter Carin LaValley (Northfield, N.H.), making her first appearance in nearly two years, registered eight kills and 13 digs in the two matches.
