BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - The Plymouth State University women's volleyball team captured the Bridgewater State College Tournament Saturday with consecutive victories over host BSC (3-2) and Wheaton College (3-0).
The Panthers, who earned a pair of three-game victories Friday night victories over Clark and Roger Williams, needed five games to defeat Bridgewater State but came back with a three-game victory over Wheaton. PSU edged BSC 28-30, 30-19, 14-30, 30-28, 15-12, and downed Wheaton for the title, 30-25, 34-32, 30-28.
Plymouth State extended its winning streak to six straight matches and nine of its last 10 to improve to 14-3 overall. Bridgewater State drops to 10-5 and Wheaton slips to 6-9.
Senior Becky Landry (Nashua, N.H.) was Plymouth State's representative on the All-Tournament Team, her second such honor this season. She registered a team-high 21 kills in the win over Bridgewater and added 15 kills against Wheaton. Landry was an all-around contributor in both matches, adding 12 digs and six blocks vs. BSC and 10 digs and three blocks against Wheaton.
Other strong performances were turned in by senior Carin LaValley (Northfield, N.H.), who posted 19 kills and 14 digs in the win over Bridgewater, and sophomore Becky Ciulla (Chelmsford, Mass.), who continued her strong play with six kills and 10 digs against the hosts and 10 kills and 13 digs in the title match win over Wheaton.
Plymouth State, which was ranked 13th in last week's New England poll, returns home to host UMass Boston in a Little East Conference match on Wednesday at Foley Gymnasium (6:00 p.m.).
