PSU Volleyball finishes runner-up at Springfield Tourney
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Plymouth State University women's volleyball team won its first two matches but was defeated in the championship match Saturday at the Tom Hay Invitational, hosted by Springfield College at Blake Arena.
The Panthers defeated Clark University in three games (30-15, 30-24, 30-18) and Gordon College in four games (25-30, 30-20, 30-26, 30-24) in pool play, but suffered a three-game defeat (30-26, 30-22, 30-28) to Springfield in the title match. Plymouth State, which is ranked eighth in New England, comes out of the weekend with a 20-5 overall record while Springfield, ranked third in New England, is 22-2 and off to its best start in 10 years.
Panther seniors Becky Landry (Nashua, N.H.) and Carin LaValley (Northfield, N.H.) were both selected to the All-Tournament team. Landry registered 40 kills and 36 digs in the three matches, along with a .378 hitting percentage, while LaValley had 34 kills and 28 digs in the tourney, including a 13-kill, 15-dig effort in the final against Springfield.
Other notable Panther performances came from sophomore Kelly Landry (Nashua, N.H.), who had 11 kills in the win over Clark and 10 kills in the victory over Gordon, and sophomore Becky Ciulla (Chelmsford, Mass.), who finished with 10 kills and 15 digs against Springfield.
Emmanuel College defeated Gordon 3-1 for third place in the tournament, and Clark edged Keene State 3-2 for fifth place. Springfield's Roxanne Breuler was named Tournament MVP.
Plymouth State returns to action Thursday with a non-conference match at St. Joseph's College in Maine (7:00 p.m.).
