GORHAM, Maine - The Plymouth State University women's volleyball team clinched second place in the Little East Conference regular season Saturday, defeating both Rhode Island College and Eastern Connecticut State University in four games in an LEC Round-Robin.
The Panthers opened the day with a 3-1 victory (28-30, 30-14, 30-20, 30-17) over RIC, and finished the afternoon with a 3-1 decision (30-19, 30-22, 29-31, 30-22) over Eastern Conn. Both matches were played at Gorham High School.
The outcome leaves PSU at 24-5 overall and 6-1 in LEC play, behind only regular season champion Western Connecticut (7-0). RIC also lost to Southern Maine to drop to 12-14 overall and 4-3 in the conference, and ECSU also fell to USM to dip to 13-17 and 3-4.
Seniors Becky Landry (Nashua, N.H.) and Carin LaValley (Northfield, N.H.) led the Panthers in the win over RIC, combining for 35 kills and 19 digs. Senior Sonia Trudell (Somersworth, N.H.) added nine digs and six blocks, and sophomore Becky Ciulla (Chelmsford, Mass.) contributed 17 digs and four blocks. Sophomore setter Amanda Bagwell (Riverside, R.I.) finished with 41 assists.
Landry and LaValley also led the Panthers in the triumph over Eastern Conn. Landry registered 18 kills and five blocks while LaValley did her part with 16 kills and 16 digs.
Plymouth State, which is ranked seventh in New England, plays at Salem State Tuesday at 7:00 p.m., then wraps up the regular season next Friday and Saturday at the Brandeis Tournament.
