PSU Volleyball defeated in ECAC Semifinal
CAMBRIDGE, MASS. - Second-seeded Brandeis University rebounded from a one-game deficit Saturday and went on to defeat third-seeded Plymouth State University in four games in the 2003 ECAC Division III New England Women's Volleyball Championships the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Brandeis was later defeated by top-seeded MIT for the championship, finishing its season at 26-15. Plymouth State completed the most successful season in the eight-year history of the program with a 29-8 overall record.
The Panthers came out strong against the Judges, winning the first game 30-27. Brandeis, who had swept PSU in three games two weeks ago, came back to win the next three, 30-22, 30-24, 30-25 to take the semifinal match. Plymouth State was making its second straight appearance in the ECAC Tournament.
All three Panther seniors played well in what turned out to be their final collegiate match. Middle hitter Becky Landry (Nashua, N.H.) had a team-high 17 kills along with 13 digs, outside hitter Carin LaValley (Northfield, N.H.) chipped in with nine kills and 20 digs, and right-side hitter Sonia Trudell (Somersworth, N.H.) added 21 digs. Sophomores Kelly Landry (Nashua, N.H.) and Becky Ciulla (Chelmsford, Mass.) were also solid contributors, each posting double-doubles; Landry finished with 12 kills and 13 digs and Ciulla ended up with 10 kills and a team-high 22 digs. Sophomore setter Amanda Bagwell (Riverside, R.I.) finished with 39 assists.
Marni Kutok led the Judges with 15 kills and 17 digs.
