Plymouth State Volleyball wins Best Inn Invitational

PLYMOUTH, N.H.

-- Plymouth State University captured the Best Inn Invitational Women's Volleyball Tournament Saturday at Foley Gymnasium, defeating Western New England College in the semifinals and Johnson and Wales University in the championship match.

            The Panthers, who improved to 4-0 on the young season, knocked off WNEC in three games (30-22, 30-26, 30-24) before upending JWU in three straight (30-25, 30-28, 32-30) to claim the title.  Johnson and Wales (3-1) earned a trip to the final match by defeating Lasell in three straight, 30-24, 30-27, 30-19.

            PSU junior Kelly Landry (Nashua, N.H.) was named tournament Most Valuable Player after combining for 17 kills and eight service aces in the final two matches.  Junior setter Amanda Bagwell (Riverside, R.I.), who recorded 28 set assists in the semifinals and 36 in the final, joined Landry on the All-Tournament team.

            Junior Becky Ciulla (Chelmsford, MA) led Plymouth State in the title match with 14 kills and three service aces.  Juniors Kim Krause (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) and Stacy Therrien (Rochester, N.H.) each added seven kills to aid in the winning cause.

            Plymouth State returns to action next Friday and Saturday (Sept. 9-10) when it takes part in the WNEC Invitational Tournament in Springfield, Mass.
