PSU Volleyball edged in WNEC Tournament finaleSPRINGFIELD, Mass.
-- Plymouth State University registered three straight wins to advance to the championship of the Western New England College Invitational Volleyball Tournament, but Amherst College spoiled PSU's day with a five-game victory in Saturday's title match.
PSU posted consecutive 3-0 victories over WNEC, Massachusetts College and Framingham State to reach the final, but Amherst pulled out the championship with 15-10 decision in the fifth and decisive game. Amherst won games one and three (30-21 and 30-28) while PSU took the even numbered games (30-25 and 30-26) to set up the rubber game.
Junior Becky Ciulla (Chelmsford, MA) was PSU's representative on the All-Tournament Team. She registered 61 kills and 39 digs in the tournament, with at least 15 kills in all four matches. She turned in a strong 15-kill, 16-dig performance in the championship match.
PSU junior Kelly Landry (Nashua, N.H.) also recorded 52 kills and 21 digs in the tournament, and junior Amanda Bagwell (Riverside, R.I.) made 148 set assists. Other solid contributions in the championship match came from juniors Kim Krause (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) and Stacy Therrien (Rochester, N.H.) and freshman Jaslyn Saab (Windham, N.H.).
Plymouth State, 7-1 overall, returns home to host Colby-Sawyer Tuesday at Foley Gymnasium (6:00 p.m.).
