Western Connecticut nips PSU Volleyball

GORHAM, Maine

- The Keene State College Owls and Western Connecticut State University Colonials posted wins Friday night in the opening round of play in the two-day, four-team Little East Conference round robin volleyball tournament being hosted by the University of Southern Maine.

            In a five-game thriller in the second match, the five-time defending champion Colonials prevailed over Plymouth State University by scores of 30-19, 14-30, 30-27, 26-30 and 15-9.  PSU also lost to WCSU in five games during the regulae season last year, including 15-9 in the final game. Keene State defeated Southern Maine in four games by scores of 30-26, 30-21, 23-30 and 30-21 in Friday's opening match.

            Freshman Tiffany Phoenix (Cresskill, N.Y.) led Western Connecticut with 15 kills and a .275 attack percentage.  Senior Tricia Lawlor (Hooksett, N.Y.) had eight kills.  Freshman Kathryn Kupchik (Cromwell, Conn.) was strong at the net with nine total blocks.  Sophomore Shannon Desmond (Quincy, Mass.) had 15 digs while sophomore Kassie Moore (Pocasset, Mass.) had 16 assists.

            Junior Kelly Landry (Nashua, N.H.) had a strong match for Plymouth State with 22 kills.  Junior Kim Krause (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) and freshman Kaitlyn Collins (Mahwah, N.J.) each contributed seven kills.  Krause also had a team-high 12 digs.  Junior setter Amanda Bagwell (Riverside, R.I.) dished out 54 assists.

            Saturday's schedule has Southern Maine playing Western Connecticut and Keene State tangling with Plymouth State (at Gorham HS) at 10:00 a.m.  Keene State will face Western Connecticut at 12:30 p.m. while Southern Maine and Plymouth State finish the event at 2:30 p.m.
