PSU Volleyball splits pair at Bates TournamentLEWISTON, Maine
- Plymouth State University split a pair of matches during pool play Friday night at the Bates Invitational Women's Volleyball Tournament.
The Panthers opened tourney play with a tough, 3-2 victory over Johnson & Wales University, and followed that with a 3-1 loss to Colby College. PSU took the odd-numbered games against JWU, including a 15-5 decision in the fifth game. The Panthers won the first game against Colby, but the Mules rebounded to take the next three to earn the victory.
PSU's tandem of juniors Becky Ciulla (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Kelly Landry (Nashua, N.H.) led the Panthers with double-doubles in both matches. Ciulla recorded 24 kills and 11 digs against JWU and added 14 kills and 20 digs in the Colby match, while Landry contributed 12 kills and 18 digs vs. JWU and 23 kills and 15 digs against Colby. They were the Little East Conference Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week this past week.
Junior setter Amanda Bagwell (Riverside, R.I.) ran the PSU offense, recording 100 assists in the two matches. Junior Kim Krause (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) also contributed for the Panthers, registering 11 kills against JWU and 15 digs vs. Colby. Junior Stacy Therrien (Rochester, N.H.) finished with 11 kills in the Colby match.
PSU, which is ranked 14th in New England, continues tournament play on Saturday, beginning with a match against Worcester State at 9:00 a.m.
