Plymouth State to compete in Little East Conference TournamentsPLYMOUTH, N.H.
- It's "Conference Tournament Week" for schools in the Little East Conference, and Plymouth State University will be right in the thick of four fall post-season tourneys.
The four Panther teams still alive, field hockey, volleyball and men's and women's soccer, will be trying to do what the PSU women's tennis team accomplished in October - win the Little East Conference Championship. The field hockey and volleyball teams will begin their quests for an LEC title with first-round home games, while the two soccer squads will hit the road in their first contests.
The Panther FIELD HOCKEY team captured its last seven regular season games to storm into the playoffs with a 13-3 overall record. PSU finished 8-2 in conference play, and as the #2 seed in this week's tournament, will host Eastern Connecticut in a first-round match-up Tuesday (Nov. 2) at Arold Field (2:30 p.m.). The semifinals and championship games are slated for Friday-Saturday (Nov. 5-6) at top-seeded and regular season champion Keene State. PSU won three straight LEC Championships from 2000-02 before being knocked out in last year's semifinals.
The PSU WOMEN'S SOCCER squad struggled during the second half of the regular season and finished in a tie for fifth in the LEC with UMass Dartmouth, both schools at 2-4-1 in conference play. The Panthers, 6-9-1 overall, won the tiebreaker over UMD and earned the #5 seed, and will visit #4 seeded Southern Maine Tuesday (Nov. 2) for a first-round game (2:00 p.m.). The semifinals and championship games are slated for Friday-Saturday (Nov. 5-6) at top-seeded and regular season champion Keene State.
The Panther MEN'S SOCCER team finished in third place with a 4-3-0 LEC mark, and will make its sixth straight appearance in the LEC semifinals. PSU, 9-6-1 overall, will make a return visit to #2 seeded Rhode Island College for Wednesday's semifinal (2:30 p.m.) after dropping a 3-0 decision to the Anchormen in last Saturday's regular season finale. Top-seeded and regular season champion Keene State hosts #4 seed Eastern Connecticut in Wednesday's other semifinal, with the LEC Championship game slated for Saturday (Nov. 6) at the site of the highest remaining seed.
The PSU VOLLEYBALL team is enjoying another outstanding season, posting a 25-11 regular season overall record. The Panthers finished in a four-way tie for the LEC regular season title, joining RIC, Western Connecticut and Eastern Connecticut with 5-2 records. After the tiebreakers, PSU received the #3 seed in the conference tournament, and will host #6 seed Keene State on Wednesday (Nov. 3) in a first-round match (6:00 p.m.). The semifinals and championship matches are slated for Friday-Saturday (Nov. 5-6) at top-seeded Rhode Island College.
The LEC tournament champion in all four sports receives an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament.
