Plymouth State captures WNEC Volleyball Invitational
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Plymouth State University earned a little revenge over Amherst College Saturday afternoon, defeating the Jeffs in four games in the title match to capture the Western New England College Invitational Volleyball Tournament.
PSU, which lost to Amherst in three games during Friday's pool play, came back with a 30-25, 30-26, 15-30, 30-28 victory over Amherst in Saturday's championship. The Panthers had advanced to the final with a 3-0 pool-play victory over Westfield State (30-22, 30-26, 30-26) and a dramatic 3-2 triumph over WNEC in the semifinals (25-30, 30-21, 30-22, 25-30, 15-13).
Senior Becky Ciulla (Chelmsford, Mass.) led the Panthers and was named Tournament Most Valuable Player. She posted 13 kills and 15 digs in the semifinal win over WNEC, and added 13 kills and a career-high 26 digs in the championship match victory. Classmate Stacy Therrien (Rochester, N.H.) was also a member of the All-Tournament Team after finishing with 13 kills in the semifinals and nine kills in the final.
PSU, 6-2 overall, gets back into action Tuesday evening with a match at Colby-Sawyer (7:00 p.m.)
