LEWISTON, Maine - The Plymouth State University women's volleyball team was defeated by two of New England's top teams Friday evening at the Bates College Invitational.
The Panthers, who are ranked 11th in New England, were knocked off in their first outing in four games (30-24, 23-30, 30-21, 30-26) by Springfield College, the eighth-ranked team in New England. Third-ranked Colby proved too much in the second match, sweeping the Panthers in three games (30-21, 30-24, 30-22).
Senior Becky Ciulla (Chelmsford, Mass.) led the Panther offense, making 16 kills against Springfield and 13 kills vs. Colby. Classmate Kelly Landry (Nashua, N.H.) added 13 kills against the Pride and 10 in the Colby match. Sophomore Kim Tobyne (Bedford, N.H.) led the defense, making 32 digs in each match, while Landry chipped in with 25 digs in the two matches. Senior setter Amanda Bagwell (Riverside, R.I.) combined for 75 assists on the evening.
PSU, 13-7, plays two more matches Saturday in the tournament, facing Worcester State at 10:00 a.m. and Bates at 3:00 p.m.
